We often get questions from caring pet parents who want to make sure they’re dosing HomeoPet products correctly – especially when it comes to very small animals like hamsters, gerbils, birds, or other pets under 1 lb.
Consequently, our fab customer service team have explained small animal dosing of HomeoPet remedies in more detail. A question commonly asked is:
My small pet is under 1 lb. The box says to add 2 drops to 8 oz of water – how am I supposed to get them to drink all of that?
A: You don’t have to! That 8 oz of water isn’t meant to be consumed entirely by your pet – it’s meant to be a dilution step. Here’s how it works:
- Start by adding 2 drops of the original HomeoPet formula to 8 oz of clean, filtered water.
This step is essential because animals under 1 lb (like hamsters, gerbils, mice, and birds) need a more diluted dose to match their tiny bodies. - Then, using a separate dropper, draw up 2 drops from that diluted solution.
This new, extra-diluted dose is what you give your pet – either directly, added to food, or dropped on a treat.
Think of the 8 oz of water as your mixing solution, not the actual amount your pet is expected to drink. This step ensures safety and efficacy by delivering a properly diluted dose to your small animal.
Bonus Tip for Pets Over 1 lb:
If your pet weighs more than 1 lb, you don’t need to follow the 8 oz dilution step. You can follow the standard dosing instructions based on their weight class. Just be sure not to confuse the small animal dilution method with the instructions for larger pets.
We hope this helps clarify how to give HomeoPet medicines to your tiny furry friends.
