Case Study: Monkey the Cat

Twenty-four hours after dental anesthesia, Monkey was weak and staggering. Despite normal pre-operative blood tests, his liver was overwhelmed by the stress of the procedure. Dr. Farrington, drawing from experience with similar cases – including a dog that took a week to regain consciousness after anesthesia – knew exactly how to help.

Monkey’s owner, Jyl, was instructed to administer HomeoPet Liver Rescue according to the label, with initial doses given more frequently to address the acute condition. Additionally, Aloe Vera Juice at a dose of 30 ml (1US Fluid oz) split over the day with a maintenance dose of 5 to 8ml was recommended, as it supports the liver, kidneys, and intestinal tract while soothing the gastrointestinal system.

Jyl reported a remarkable improvement:
“Hi Tom, thank you again for taking on Monkey. He woke up yesterday and walked out for his food! Very gingerly but huge improvement. He is still low vitality and hides most the day which is unlike him but at least I’m seeing progress. It’s been hard to get him on video, he’s so quiet but got a little video of him going for his breakfast today. He is still walking like injured but a little more fluid.

Monkey’s anesthesia cocktail contained Cerenia to prevent vomiting, Buprenex for pain, Midazolam and propofol for anesthesia. This is quite a normal drug load for this purpose, but the liver in particular has to work very has hard and in some cases needs support, as it certainly did in this cat!

A few days later Dr. Farrington received another update from Jyl:

“Hi Tom. I’m not sure if you’re traveling yet but wanted to give you the happy update – Monkey was still a little lethargic yesterday but moving a little better and started to climb. I hadn’t given any aloe until I got home with the citric acid aloe. I probably gave him about 3ml twice that night and his remedies. Woke up at 4:30 am to him running up to me so excited to see me. Cuddly like his old self. He ran around a bit and then lay down. He ate his breakfast and was also very animated. Seemed to tire out fast and looked a little like he was hung over or spacey but such a dramatic difference even from the prior day.”
