Homeopathy Anxiety Preparation

Madam,

At Halloween and New Year's Eve, when there is a high level of firework explosions, many dogs show exaggerated behaviour, often expressed by increased barking, hiding, biting and destructive behaviour, which they do not exhibit in the absence of such stimuli. Many owners consult their veterinarians and are prescribed sedatives or anxiolytic medication. The use of nonconventional therapy is dogged by the absence of real scientific demonstration of efficiency and without properly conducted trials it never will be accepted by the vast majority of veterinary practitioners. Recently, we ran a small trial, which attempted to determine the efficiency of a Homeopathy Anxiety Preparation to ameliorate the effect of fireworks on dogs with known history of untoward reactions.

After the purpose of the trial had been explained, the owners of 22 individual dogs were given the test material and their normal medications; they were able to initially use the test material and if it proved to be unsatisfactory to revert to their usual preparation. After the trial period, a veterinary nurse interviewed the owners: 17 owners (77.3%) reported a positive effect. Studies in other countries have shown similar effects. This was a simple survey and it did not involve any controls to check for placebo effect, either in the animals or in the owners. A further trial is planned and it would be really useful if veterinary surgeons would volunteer to participate. Please contact: email, pnowlan@tcd.i,e
